LSU needs you!
Collective organising is our goal as a union, but to do so we also need people to keep the union itself running. To do so effectively we have decided to create a few committees and workgroups. We’ll explain what these are here!
What are committees?
A committee is a group of people that works on a task or towards a shared goal for a fixed period, and is voluntary but not free of obligations: Should you decide to join a committee you are expected to do the tasks you signed up for. If something comes up and you are no longer able to do so you can leave the committee, but we do expect people to work for a whole term. If you want to join a committee you can indicate that on the committee interest form. The board will then reach out to you to form an optimal team for the committee. An exception to this process is the financial audit committee, who are elected by the general assembly. If you are interested in joining it you should formally apply by sending an application letter and CV to the review committee, which will then include it in the GA dispatch for the election.
What are workgroups?
There are also plenty of tasks that don’t require the full attention of a committee, but could still benefit from skilled volunteers. For these kinds of tasks we have workgroups: groups of people that share a skill or passion that we can easily reach out to for help. Members of these workgroups are not required to put in any time if they don’t want to, but if they accept a project then we do expect them to deliver on that.
What committees do we have?
Oversight committee / Raad van Toezicht (RvT)
As the board is tasked with running the union and the general assembly is only held a few times a year, there is a need for someone to hold the board accountable in between these meetings. This is the task of the oversight committee. Furthermore, they serve as a pool of legal and regulatory knowledge to the board and GA. The oversight committee consists of both LSU members and people from outside the union, and its members are people with experience in law, union administration and with relevant societal experience. The oversight committee have the right to call a general assembly if they feel it is necessary and the board is required to give them a copy of the members register and update it regularly. If you feel that the board is overstepping its authority or not following the statutes or regulations, you can contact the oversight committee confidentially.
Financial audit committee / kascontrolecommissie (KasCo)
Our statutes (and Dutch law) requires our finances to be independently audited, and the responsibility to do so falls on the Financial audit committee. For this committee we are mostly looking for people with prior experience in financial administration, such as former treasurers from other organisations or those studying a relevant field. This committee is elected by the general assembly and its members are appointed for one year, although we want to encourage people to apply for successive terms to guarantee continuity and preserve relevant knowledge for this committee.
Action committee
Do you love organising actions? Then the action committee needs you! This committee organises the smaller actions we participate in and explores what larger actions we’d like to organize or support. For larger actions a dedicated committee can be formed in cooperation with the board.
Recruitment committee (WelCom)
To be an effective union we need as many members as we can get, and reaching out to potential members takes a lot of work. Sign up for this committee if you’d like to help shape the recruitment campaign for LSU and help us grow!
Communication committee (CoCo)
If you don’t have an online presence, then do you really exist? A website and social media presence are key to promoting LSU. If helping build this sounds like fun, then the CoCo is the committee you should join!
Which workgroups are there?
Photography workgroup
Do you love taking pictures? Do you bring your camera everywhere you go? Then you should sign up for the Photography workgroup so that we can call on you to photograph our events!
Design workgroup
Are you into graphical design or drawing? Do you love designing posters or drawing cartoons? Join our design workgroup and put that passion to good use!
Language workgroup
Do you love translating texts? Do you hate seeing grammatical error? The language workgroup is your chance to help LSU communicate correctly and effectively.
