Unions

Besides LSU there are several other unions that represent students or academics:

HUS

We consider the Hague Union of Students (HUS) to be a sister union, which partly grew out from our own rebirth, so if you live, work or study in the Hague, this might be useful to you. We also try to work closely with them considering that Leiden University has muliple campuses there and it’s fairly close by.

FNV & AOb

The Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging (FNV) is the biggest national union and the Algemene Onderwijsbond (AOb) is the main teachers union (and an independent part of FNV). Both represent many teachers and school staff, but you can also sign up if you’re a student and the membership fees are very cheap. If you’ve just finished studying or are doing a PhD, we would recommending joining one of these.

LSVb

The Landelijke Studenten Vakbond (LSVb) is the national federation of the local student unions. Students cannot directly join them, but are instead represented through their local union, such as LSU or HUS. This coöperation goes both ways: LSVb has been of great assistance while reëstablishing LSU, while we provide them with local knowledge and organising when needed.

The LSVb also provides resources that we are unable to provide locally such as the Housing Hotline.

If you’re having problems with exams, thesis, tuition fees, internship pay, DUO, Studentenreisproduct, Public Transit, or other complaints, always feel free to contact the LSVb Student line.

Politics

The Landelijk Overleg Fracties (LOF) is a national organisation which promotes and facilitates the exchange of information on higher education policy. LOF works together with LSVb and other organisations to democratise higher education policy across the Netherlands.
